Payroll Specialist

Additional Information: SUMMARY Assists in the processing of payroll and payroll-related benefits for employees, preparation and filing of payroll reports and other related payroll duties. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following: • Assists in the processing of monthly and bi-weekly payroll a) Enters time card data, extra duty forms and other information b) Calculates overtime hours and rates c) Verifies and determines the accurate classification and coding of expenditures d) Processes Leave reports for departments e) Processes payroll checks for distribution to employees f) Prepares and maintains complete and accurate payroll and personnel database g) Maintains accurate supporting data, including employee records, sick leave, payroll deductions and expenditure distribution journals h) Entry of annual membership deductions for professional and support staff members (TCTA, ATPE, TESPA) • Processes related payroll liability checks • Assists the Payroll Supervisor in the preparation of monthly TRS grant reports and related journal entries, quarterly Federal tax and unemployment reports, and annual W-2 report • Maintains annuity and life insurance deduction billings and submits payment • Sets up and submits Child Support payments • Calculates amounts when wages are garnished ( IRS, student loans, bankruptcy) • Assists District employees in payroll-related matters; prepares and submits payroll information requested by employees • Verifies employment status when requests are received • Assists in the maintenance of the KRONOS Time keeping System and the training of personnel on its use • Perform other tasks as may be assigned by Supervisor/Superintendent. Work demands include numerous critical deadlines; must be able and willing to work under pressure and to work overtime when necessary. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE High school graduate or equivalent with at least five years experience in accounting, payroll or similar jobs. LANGUAGE SKILLS Ability to read and interpret technical procedures, governmental laws and regulations and TRS regulations. Ability to read and comprehend financial data. Ability to prepare reports and communications. Ability to communicate with employees, administrators, insurance carriers and others. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as gross wages, deductions, and payroll benefits. REASONING ABILITIES Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to prioritize work and plan adequately to meet deadlines. Ability to recognize unusual financial data indication possible errors. OTHER SKILLS/ABILITIES Must be proficient in the use of computers and related software. Should have experience in word processing, spreadsheet and database software programs with reasonable keyboard speed. Must have ability to learn and implement new software programs. Must be able to use 10-key pads by touch at reasonable speed.
