Primary Purpose:

Under the supervision of the school nurse (RN), will work in the nurses office in the absence of the regularly assigned nurse. Also will assist nurses in providing vision, hearing and spinal screenings. May attend field trips as needed to provide care to students off campus. Will assume routine recordkeeping activities, providing minor first aid care, and conducting health screenings at campus level. Work under the immediate guidance and direction of a licensed registered nurse to the extent licensure or certification allows.

Qualifications:

 Education/Certification:
High School diploma or GED for aide
College Degree with current nurse’s license for nurse
Unlicensed Diabetic Care Assistant certification preferred
 
Special Knowledge/Skills for nurse and aide:
Knowledge of basic first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Proficient keyboarding
Ability to use personal computer
Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
 
Special Knowledge/Skills for nurse:
For the nurse: Ability to perform nursing assessments and provide care per current licensure.
             For the aide: Ability to provide first aide and know when to contact the RN.
 
Experience:
One year’ experience in health-related position, including contact with school-age children

Major Responsibilities and Duties:


Health Services

  1. Provide basic first aid and care for minor injuries and illness according to a detailed protocol established by the school nurse (RN).
  2. Licensed nurse will assess complaints and provide care as allowed within his/ her licensure. Reporting to the district nurse whenever necessary.
  3. Administer medication to students according to board policy and district procedures; maintain accurate log of medications dispensed.
  4. Take vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration rate, and blood pressure). Communicate findings to supervising school health staff for direction if aide.
  5. Assist with screening activities including measuring height and weight, testing vision and hearing,
 And spinal screenings and scalp.
  1. Escort students to and from health room and assist students with disabilities as necessary.
  2.       Contact parents of students who need to be picked up from school according to established school                          health services protocols or as directed by the school nurse (RN).
  3. Contact EMS according to established school health services protocols or as directed by the school nurse (RN).

Safety

  1. Use Universal Precautions Procedures when cleaning all body spills and providing wound care.
  2. Keep health clinic clean and sanitary.

Clerical

  1. Record information on student health records.
  2. Send out routine notices to parents.
  3. Maintain a daily log of health office activities, including reportable accidents, communicable disease data, and referrals to school nurse (RN).

Compliance

  1. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rule, State Board of Education rule, and board policy in health services area.
  2. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  3. Maintain confidentiality.
  

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 None.

 Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, audiometer, vision screening equipment, basic clinic equipment, glucometer, personal computer, and copier.
