Primary Purpose:
To evaluate, plan, organize, and implement research-based therapy for students with dyslexia.  To support, encourage these students, their parents, and teachers as they develop their academic potential.
 
Education/Certification:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Valid CALT certification from the Academic Language Therapy Association
  • Valid Texas Teacher Certification
  • Valid Dyslexia Therapist license from the Texas Department of Health Services

Major Responsibilities and Duties:
  • To plan, prepare, and deliver instructional activities that facilitate active learning experiences
  • To develop individualized plans for therapy
  • To evaluate students for the determination of dyslexia
  • To assist in creating and implementing a 504 plan for students with dyslexia
  • To establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning experiences
  • To prepare an environment conducive for therapy sessions
  • To monitor the success of students who have completed the program on the assigned campus(s)
  • To observe and evaluate student performance
  • To maintain accurate, current, and complete records of student progress and evaluations – updating as necessary per district policy
  • To prepare required reports in a complete and efficient manner
  • To maintain discipline in accordance with campus/district policies
  • To participate in departmental meetings and training sessions
  • To participate in any meetings or conferences concerning identified students on the campus(s) i.e., 504, ARD, and parent conferences
  • To communicate regularly to students, parents, and colleagues regarding student progress and relevant information based on field of expertise
  • To keep current in the field by attending trainings and staff development opportunities
  • To maintain CALT and LDT status
  • To inform teachers on how to recognize the characteristics of dyslexia
  • To support home campus (the home campus is determined as the campus at which that therapist serves the most students)
  • Perform duties as assigned by the campus administration (if a therapist serves more than one campus, she will be exempt from morning and afternoon duties)
  • To be responsible for the Take Flight curriculum and all of its components. Other interventions and progress monitoring are the responsibility of the ELA teacher and the Reading Coach assigned to that campus.
  • To assist in benchmarking and STAAR administration of third grade students identified with dyslexia

  • Maintain emotional control under stress. Work with frequent interruptions, prolonged and irregular hours. Frequent district-wide travel.
  • Prolonged sitting. Occasional bending/stooping, pushing/pulling and twisting
  • Repetitive hand motions including frequent keyboarding and use of mouse
  • Occasional light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds)
