Primary Purpose:  Provide students with a culturally responsive school counseling program that promotes academic, career, and social/emotional development and equitable opportunity and achievement outcomes for all students.

Qualifications:
Education/Certifications
  • Master’s degree 
  • Valid Texas School Counselor Certification

Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and school guidance for secondary school
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Ability to present information in one-on-one, small group, and large group situations to students, parents or guardians, and staff
Experience
  • Experience in a school setting preferred.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Counselor  
  1. Plan, organize, implement, and deliver program activities to improve students’ intrapersonal effectiveness, interpersonal effectiveness, personal health and safety, and next-level school planning and selection.
  2. Create a balanced curriculum by using well-planned and intentional activities and materials, incorporating guest speakers, engaging lessons, and appropriate technology tools.
  3. Teach guidance lessons through the use of effective instructional strategies.
  4. Collaborate with teachers to identify student needs.
  5. Manage student accommodations by monitoring student progress, communicating with parents and teachers, and creating accommodation plans.
  6. Schedule and facilitate accommodation meetings.
  7. Educate staff on stress, behavior, and trauma-informed strategies. 
  8. Collaborate with Assistant Head of School to plan and implement standardized testing for grades 1-6.
  9. Assist students in coping with problem situations or unwise choices. Identify precipitating and antecedent factors, effective and ineffective approaches to dealing with the circumstances, and provide feedback to guide future decisions.
  10. Assist the Head of School and Assistant Head of School with disciplinary situations.
  11. Support students in crisis situations requiring immediate response. 
  12. Coordinate with agencies and community outreach programs to provide students with needed services.
  13. Collect, summarize, and interpret testing data to plan, create interventions, guide students, and address specific student needs.
  14. Participate on the PEACE Team.
  15. Assess prospective students.
  16. Sit on the admissions committee for prospective students.
  17. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, and board policy. Comply with all district and campus routines and regulations.
  18. Adhere to legal, ethical, and professional standards for school counselors, including current professional standards of competence and practice.

  2. Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as needed.

  5. Serve on school committees as needed
  6. Maintain and uphold the standards of the school accrediting body: Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools (SAES).
  7. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Head of School.
