Windham School District provides educational programs to meet the needs of the residents within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). Job Title: Assistant Managing Editor - ECHO

Primary Purpose:
Work involves the planning, preparation and editing of articles for the publication of The ECHO. Supervision of a resident-based staff to assist with development of ECHO issues. Works under supervision with extended latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university accredited by an organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or by the United States Department of Education (USDE). Major coursework in Journalism or Mass Communications.

Experience: Two years of full-time, wage-earning experience in the field of communications or journalism or two years of experience in correctional administration
 
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of the Adobe Suite, specifically InDesign
Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) style, spelling, punctuation and grammar
Ability to communicate with varied audiences
Skills in conducting interviews, technical writing, editing and development of publications
 
Major Responsibilities and Duties:

1. Set appropriate deadlines for the planning and development of articles for the agency’s publication of The ECHO as assigned.
2. Conduct telephonic, virtual and in-person interviews as required to gather information for articles.
3. Train, advise and supervise resident workers in researching, writing and editing articles for publication.
4. Work closely with the Managing Editor to coordinate layout of The ECHO publications.
5. Verify information to be used for publication.
6. Read and edit style, grammar, punctuation and clarity of expression of articles prepared by staff writers.

Policy, Reports, and Law:

7. Ensure that content conforms to legal provisions, and arrange for the printing and distribution of The Echo.
8. Prepares reports, studies, and specialized research projects to include review of reader suggestions and publication problems.
9. Maintain confidentiality in handling sensitive information received in the performance of the job duties.
10. Perform duties in a professional manner through daily, punctual attendance at location of work assignment.
11. Follow Windham School District policies and procedures in completing assigned job duties.
12. Execute duties in a professional, ethical and responsible manner as defined in 19 TAC Chapter 247, Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.
