Position:    Waco Behavioral Instructional Aide

General Responsibilities:

The Behavioral Instructional Aide will assist the teacher with behavior and instructional support. The Behavioral Instructional Aide will also assist teachers with the management of the classroom, including diffusing disruptive student behavior, to refocus and transition students into classroom activities.

Essential Functions:

  1. Maintain confidentiality of client/agency information as required by State and Federal laws, appropriate regulations, and professional practice.
  2. Ability to communicate effectively in written and/or verbal form to elementary students, parents, members of the public, and staff; communicate and plan events that include involvement from parents/guardians; attend appropriate staff meetings.
  3. Must consistently demonstrate and communicate EOAC’s Mission and Vision.
  4. Promote a positive, caring climate for learning for elementary students. Manages student learning in accordance with the goals and directives of the school district.
  5. Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed, and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
  6. Diffuse disruptive behaviors, refocus and transition the student into classroom activities.
  7. Assist individual students with classroom assignments; assist with activities such as storytelling, music activities, games, playground supervision and serving meals; ensure that students are adequately supervised during non-instructional periods; assist the teacher in implementing individual educational and behavioral goals and objectives.
  8. Assist with safety inspections and safety-drill practice activities; assist in conducting daily health inspections.
  9. Assist with leadership of the class in absence of teacher.
  10. Initiate and complete clerical duties such as organizing, filing, and copying materials; assist in grading classroom assignments; Operate and assuming responsibility for audio-visual and technology equipment in classroom; Assist in creating and preparing bulletin boards.
  11. Comply with all federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and agency policy.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

  3. Ability to redirect student behavior and diffuse difficult behavior.
  4. Intermediate skill and familiarity with Microsoft Office Applications: Word, Excel and Outlook.
  5. Must have effective presentation of information and strong spoken language skills.
  6. Ability and desire to work with elementary school students from an at-risk population, as stated in the Waco Charter School charter.
  7. Ability to maintain confidentially of student records, charter school records, and other sensitive student data.
  8. Comply with the Code of Ethics for Texas Educators.
  9. Must be able to follow oral and written directions and have the ability to establish effective working relationships with staff and students.
 

Work Environment

  1. This job operates in a professional office environment with ambient lighting, and climate control.
  2. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
  3. Prolonged sitting and standing.

  1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
  2. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bending or standing on a stool as necessary.
  3. Lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
  4. Maintain emotional control under stress.
  5. Exposure to temperature extremes (hot and cold), humidity extremes, noise, low or intense illumination. Occasional exposure to biological hazards (communicable diseases, bacteria, insects, etc.).
Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Must have completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education (defined as completion of 48 semester hours (or equivalent trimester hours) of college coursework or an applicable number of semester hours as defined by the institution of higher education attended whichever is less; OR Have obtained an associate’s (or higher) degree; OR Have met a rigorous standard of quality and can demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment – 
    1. Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics; OR
    2. Knowledge of, and the ability to assist in instructing, reading readiness, writing readiness, and mathematics readiness, as appropriate
  2. Must be able to pass Criminal History check including FBI fingerprint and DFPS background check. Candidate must have a satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background check. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by the employee.
  3. Must pass all pre-employment contingencies including post-offer pre-employment physical, and alcohol and drug screen.

Travel:

Ability for in-state travel, as required for training.


Preferred Qualifications:

A valid Texas Teacher Aide certification for grades/subjects assigned. 


Other Duties:

Perform all other duties as deemed necessary by the Executive Director or Waco Charter School Principal.

 

Work Schedule: 

This is a full-time position. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
